From Montejaque to the Hundidero Dam and Cave entrance
An interesting and stunning circular route, from the pretty mountain village Montejaque, to a very strange reservoir and dam and down to the impressive huge entrance of a cave, called "Hundidero" - the sinkhole
Our path leads us along an almost always dry water reservoir to an amazing big old dam, built in between beautiful karstic rocky mountains. It was built in the beginning of the 20th century. The dam itself was an engineering masterpiece, the biggest in Europe at the time and probably will survive a few more centuries, but it was built without mother nature’s consent. What failed was the geological studies, the many caves hidden between the rocks on each side of the dam, let the water disappear, and the reservoir never filled up.
Behind the dam, we walk down to the huge entrance of the Hundidero cave, we don’t enter the cave, the entrance is impressive enough. From there we walk back over a mountain pass back to the village.
