La Sauceda - a night in the deep forest
La Sauceda is one of the most magic places, an abandoned village with old stone houses in the middle of the deepest cork forest. A beautiful hike and an unforgettable night under the stars and the full moon
If the giant cork oaks that hide the abandoned village of La Sauceda under their shadow could speak, their sad stories would be a very great contrast to the unique beauty of the surroundings. The village was bombed in the civil war and almost completely destroyed. The ruins of hundreds of houses and their church are still there, partly restored and adapted for rural tourism. Nature has taken over the place and what remains of the village could be the backdrop for a film called "The Enchanted Forest".
From La Sauceda we hike to the highest peak of the natural park "El Aljibe" with a breathtaking view and an anthropomorphic grave with an not very believable legend...
We return on another path that leads us past a small lagoon in the forest, the "Laguna del Moral".
Staying overnight
In this special occasion we spend a night in the village. Some of the houses have been restored, very simple and basic, but new, clean mattresses, you have to bring your own sheets and food. From the car to the village it's only about 30 minutes. On the morning of our arrival, we take our stuff up to the houses and continue only with our day back-pack to the top. Everyone brings some food to share with the others.
Important: This is not a party, we go there to enjoy nature and the sounds of the forest.
